Below is found a short overview of the history of ScanBalt. The history does by not give deserved credit to the many individuals, organisations, institutions, regional, national and supra-national authorities who has been or is involved in the continuous development of ScanBalt BioRegion.

2001

2002

  • The pilot project “ScanBalt BioRegion” co-funded by the Nordic Innovation Center/Nordic Council of Ministers initiated, June
  • The project “ScanBalt Bioregion – Networks of Networks” co-funded by the Nordic Innovation Center/Nordic Council of Ministers initiated, December

2003

  • 2nd ScanBalt Forum, Gdansk, October (1st Baltic Biotech Forum is counted being the first)

2004

  • The Scanbalt Agro-biotech Network co-funded by NorFa (NordForsk) initiated, February
  • The project “Boosting Baltic FP6” co-funded by EU FP 6, initiated, June
  • 3rd ScanBalt Forum,Turku, Finland, August
  • ScanBalt becomes an independent legal entity, non profit membership association, ScanBalt™ fmba, August
  • The first Chairmanship of ScanBalt elected with Prof. Bo Samuelsson, University of Gothenburg, serving as the first Chairman. Børge Diderichsen (Novo Nordisk), Anna Podhajska (University of Gdansk), Wolfgang Blank (BioCon Valley) and Jaanus Pikani (Estonian Biotech Association) are serving as vice chairmen, August.
  • The General Secretary appointed by the Chairmanship, August
  • The project “ScanBalt Competenceregion” co-funded by EU FP 6 initiated, October

2005

  • ScanBalt enters a strategic partnership with the Baltic Development Forum (www.bdforum.org), February
  • The project “ScanBalt Intellectual Property Knowledge Network” co-funded by EU FP 6 initiated, March
  • The project “ScanBalt Clinical Research Network” co-funded by the Nordic Innovation Center/Nordic Council of Ministers initiated, March
  • The project “ScanBalt Campus” co-funded by EU Interreg lll B initiated, May
  • The ScanBalt Media and Press Clip Service to the members initiated, May
  • ScanBalt Academy established with Professors Kaare Norum, Oslo and Leena Peltonen-Palotie, Helsinki, as chairman and vice-chairman respectively, June
  • ExCo adopts a new strategy for 2006-2008, June
  • 4th ScanBalt Forum, Oslo, Norway, November

2006

  • The project “Communication in ScanBalt BioRegion” co-funded by the Nordic Innovation Center initiated, March
  • The first ScanBalt Annual Report on ScanBalt achievements released, June
  • 5th ScanBalt Forum, Tartu, Estonia, September
  • ScanBalt became a strategic partner of the Council of the Baltic Sea States, CBSS (www.cbss.org), September
  • The ScanBalt Yellow Page directory launched, September
  • The project “Boost Bio Systems” co-funded by EU FP 6 initiated, October

2007

  • The project “Trayss Prime” co-funded by EU FP 6 initiated, January
  • The report “ScanBalt Competence Region: ScanBalt - Top of Europe: Competencies in Life Sciences and Biotechnology in the Baltic Sea Region”released, February
  • ScanBalt Press Tour for invited journalists, Helsinki, Finland, February
  • ScanBalt, the Nordic Embassies in Berlin and Baltic Development Forum organized the conference “Talents on Top of Europe”, Berlin, Germany, June
  • 6th ScanBalt Forum, Copenhagen, Denmark, October
  • Prof. Hans-Robert Metelmann, Greifswald, elected new Chairman of ScanBalt, October

2008

  • The project “Bridge-BSR” co-funded by EU FP 7 initiated, January
  • The ScanBalt Academy House in Schwerin donated by Landesregierung Mecklenburg-Vorpommern opened, March
  • The publication “ScanBalt Academy Fellows 2008” presenting mission, vision and fellows of ScanBalt Academy, released, March
  • ScanBalt Academy develops the concept for ScanBalt Summer Schools, June
  • ScanBalt strategy “Innovation on Top of Europe 2008-2011” adopted by ExCo June
  • 7th ScanBalt Forum, Vilnius, Lithuania, September
  • ScanBalt Biomaterial days for the 1st time organised in parallel with ScanBalt Forum, September
  • Katarina Gårdfeldt (Centre for Environment and Sustainablity, Gotherburg) and Tero Piispanen, Finnish HealthBio (Turku), elected vice chairmen.
  • The Nordic-Baltic Expats Forum funded by companies, universities, regions and organisations around the Baltic Sea Region initiated in collaboration with BioLogue ( www.biologue.dk ), October
  • ScanBalt Liaison Office co-funded by the City of Tartu, opened in Tartu, Estonia, October

2009

  • Affiliated Membership introduced for regions, institutions and organisations outside ScanBalt BioRegion, May
  • The report “Bridging Academia and SME´s in the Baltic Sea Region - Smart Growth as the Basis for Sustainability” giving recommendations on collaboration between SMEs and Academia released, June
  • ScanBalt Academy conference on the Nordic Dimension, Oslo, June
  • 8th ScanBalt Forum and ScanBalt Biomaterial Days, Kalmar, Sweden, October
  • The EU flagship project "Baltic Sea Health Region" launched, October
  • ScanBalt Campus German office in Rostock funded by Landesregierung Mecklenburg-Vorpommern initiates activities, November

  • Wolfgang Blank, CEO BioCon Valley, elected new Chairman of ScanBalt, January
