OPENING OF THE SCANBALT ACADEMY HOUSE

ScanBalt Academy composed of highly esteemed experts and representing the highlights of research in the Baltic Sea area held the Inaugural Conference in Schwerin, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, on March 12th, 2008. The Conference was the first general assembly of the fellows and the event marked the opening of the ScanBalt Academy House.

The settlement of the ScanBalt Academy in Schwerin, graciously donated by Landesregierung of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will have positive impact for the region and play a significant role within the regional and global scientific community.  Hans-Robert Metelmann, the Chairman of ScanBalt says: ”The ScanBalt Academy will monitor or start initiatives linking science to business. Forcing investments as a result will create new jobs and increased competitiveness. An aim is to attract resource to the Baltic Sea region, like internationally trained young scientists.”

On the agenda was discussion of a ScanBalt Center of Excellence in Cancer Prevention in line with the FP7 Capacities Work Programme of the European Union. The Ministerpresident of Mecklenburg- Vorpommern, Dr. Harald Ringstorff, kindly agreed to take political leadership in this proposal. As a gesture of commitment to ScanBalt Academy the Ministerpresident also patronized the conference.

Participation of many politicians, among others Minister of Health Erwin Sellering and Minister  of  Economy, deputy  Ministerpresident Jürgen  Seidel was a very positive sign that politicians and prominent scientists are coming together and are discussing the connection and interplay between them. The Landersregierung Mecklenburg-Vorpommern kindly provided a financial grant to support the work of ScanBalt Academy.

A brochure presenting the fellows of ScanBalt Academy was published. DOWNLOAD
