Education & research in ScanBalt
ScanBalt Campus (SBC) is a European model case for transnational and transsectorial institution building in education, research and development. The ScanBalt BioRegion encompasses 11 countries and 85 million people. There are more than 60 universities and more than 870 biotech/life science companies. ScanBalt encompasses a number of networks between universities, biotech/life science industry, hospitals and other important actors in the biotech/life science arena. The individual European bioregions are relatively too small to be competitive in a global perspective and therefore the main actors in the Nordic countries and Baltic Sea states have created the first meta-bioregion ScanBalt BioRegion.
SBC is a pilot project aimed at creating a critical mass in research and education within some selected scientific areas within biotechnology and life science and to increase the mobility of students, lecturers and researchers within the ScanBalt region. The project pioneers in putting the Bologna process into practise within a large network. Furthermore, SBC aims at being a model for a trans-national and trans-sectorial organization, based on education, research and development.
SBC will include several components, such as a ”virtual university”, an academy of scientists, and a media database. The virtual university will be accessed via an internet portal, the one-stop-entry to all activities within SBC. In addition to listing courses, lectures, available positions, and ongoing research projects within the knowledge networks, the website will provide access to all member organisations and information about upcoming calls for proposals from funding agencies, etc.
