9 FOCUS AREAS

So far the key focus areas for the INNOFISK umbrella are defined as follows:

1. BREEDING OF NEW FISH SPECIES So far fish farming is only limited to a small number of fish species. Research into the breeding of new sweet or salt-water fish species, preferably species threatened with extinction, is desirable in order to safeguard the existence of a wide range of fish species in the future

2. COMBINATION BREEDING Research into combined breeding of different fish species in the same contained environment. Close monitoring of animal behaviour and wellbeing constitute an integral part of the research project.

3. BREEDING PROCESS Research into optimisation of the breeding process, for instance using water recirculation systems, by increasing energy efficiency or through the recycling of waste streams.

4. NOVEL FISH FEED COMPONENTS Research into alternative feed components, for instance from yeasts, plants or algae, partially replacing current fishmeal and fish oil. Aspects such as digestibility and food conversion are part of the envisaged research.

5. ANIMAL WELL BEING AND PREVENTION OF FISH DISEASES Research into living conditions causes of stress, cannibalism and the prevention of disease outbreaks such as sea lice and infectious anaemia.

6. IMPROVED FISH PROCESSING Innovative fish processing techniques that allow for traceability throughout the entire fish production chain.

7. FISH WASTE MANAGEMENT Research into alternative waste handling systems and the reduction of environmental pollution.

8. NUTRITIONAL VALUE Research into the nutritional value of farmed fish, its influence on the overall health and its value in the prevention of diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases.

9. DEVELOPMENT OF A QUALITY HALLMARK. Research into the development of a quality hallmark, which allows for transparency and traceability along the entire chain from the purchase of raw materials up to the purchased food.
