The SBCampus Knowledge Network on Molecular Diagnostics will provide high-quality education and training activities as well as research and exchange of students and teachers within the ScanBalt BioRegion. It will be implemented as:
- long-term activities, e.g. training courses open for national and foreign applicants (graduate students - M. Sc. course in molecular diagnostics, clinical laboratory managers and technicians, industrial researchers, MD specializing in diagnostics of infectious diseases and cancer, plant protection officers)
- short-term activities, e.g. regular workshops and conferences to verify and update the knowledge on molecular diagnostics – international expertise-based conferences and summer schools, short-term visits of researchers and several-week trainings for students from ScanBalt Campus members. Above activities are anchored in existing educational structures of the Faculty.
The Network focus on the extension of existing expertise in molecular diagnostics to highly specialized fields, development of new diagnostics tools for commercial use and the development of new diagnostic strategies in the early detection of cancer metastasis in addition with improvement of standards in experimental research on cancer. Also in focus are the development of new diagnostics tools for large scale detection and identification of plant pathogens, application of herpes virus glycoprotein obtained in baculovirus system in the diagnosis of animal diseases, and the development of recombinant vaccines against parasites of animals.
The Molecular Diagnostics network is coordinated by the Intercollegiate Faculty of Biotechnology, University of Gdańsk and Medical University of Gdańsk. These act as a hub together with the Technical University of Gdańsk. The Hub acts in collaboration with University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf, Institute of Tumor Biology and Radium Hospital, Oncology Department, Oslo, Norway.
The network is co-financed by FP6 and COST.
