Polish higher education in brief
| 1) Organization There are various types of non-university and university higher education institutions: wyższe szkłyzawodowe (non-university higher vocational schools), kolegia nauczycielskie (teacher training colleges), uniwersytety (traditional universities), politechniki (technological universities) and akademie (academies). 2) Access The final examination certificate (świadectwo dojrzałości) is required by all institutions for admission to higher education. Admission is based on entrance examinations organized by most faculties or on free recruitment. In most cases, these institutions are free to decide on how to organise recruitment procedures. 3) Qualifications At the end of 3- or 4-year higher vocational education, students are awarded the vocational qualification diploma and the title of licencjat or inżynier which gives them access to the job market or to extended higher studies. Universities and other university-type institutions of 4.5 to 6 year duration issue dyplomukoñczenia studiów wyższych (the university higher education diploma). Students are awarded the title of magister, magister edukacji, magister sztuki, magister , magister inżynier architekt, or lekarz,lekarz stomatolog, lekarz weterynarii, magister pielêgniarstwa, magister połżnictwa, depending on the field of studies they have followed. They can apply to do a doctorate. In the academic year 2002/03 there were 377 HEIs in Poland (both public and non-public) and 1 800 000 higher education students.
