    LIFE SCIENCE IN LITHUANIA

Lithuania has developed a remarkably strong bioindustry in the field of industrial biotechnology (esp. biocatalysts), not only in comparison with the other Baltic countries. With Fermentas and Sicor Biotech as two internationally active and highly competitive spin outs of the Institute of Biotechnology there is a good basis to further strengthen the Lithuanian bioindustry on a mid- and long-term perspective. To achieve this goal more internal (national) support and investment will be necessary. Although a “Biotech Programme 2006 – 2010” has been formulated by the government all actors miss a sustainable long term strategy, a clear governmental commitment and first concrete steps to support the industry according to the programme.

The country has a well-developed system of universities and colleges. The total number of institutions involved in R&D is over a hundred and fifty.
University studies are organised in three cycles: first cycle (undergraduate Bachelor) studies; second cycle (graduate Master’s or specialised professional) studies; third cycle (post-graduate residency, doctoral or post-graduate art) studies. University studies can be integrated when the first and the second cycles are combined. University higher education is provided by universities.
Lithuania uses its own national credit system. 1 Lithuanian credit equals to one study week. One national credit is equal to 1,5 ECTS credit.
